Any of you guys use movable type, I'm wondering how that puppy stacks up against WordPress? I figured I'd get with the 90's and start a blog Very Happy

I'm kind of liking MT but there seems to be a higher learning curve, where as WordPress seems to be the defacto standard

i can tell you what i know about blogger and wordpress, but i dont know much about MT.

Blogger - If you want a domain name just 10$/year hosting is free (subdomain is free)
it is free and easy to edit HTML, CSS, you can use javascript etc...

Wordpress.com- IF you want a domain its 15$/year hosting is free (subdomain is free)
no access to HTML or CSS unless you pay extra/month., no javascript
BUT wordpress has some features like all of your comments in one place (which is really nice)

wordpress.org - this is if you have your own hosting and then all the above limitations dont exist...

I like blogger because its more customizable. But if you dont plan on getting your hands dirty in the code then wordpress is generally the way to go. sometimes I wish I had the comments features of wordpress....

you could also look into typepad... here is something i found online:
http://www.learningmovabletype.com/a/000510typepad_or_mt/

good luck... let us know when you create the link

Thanks, I already have a web host so dealing with the domain name/hosting stuff is already taken care of.

I'm just starting to dabble with WP, not sure if I like it. It definitely has way more themes and plug-ins then MT, but I seem to like the look, feel and interaction of MT.

I'm the kind of guy that mulls things over and over (and over) so I'll still be investigating and looking into this for a little while. the good thing with my web host is that I have unlimited databases so I can have both setup and compare them side by side.

I like WordPress because of how it handles and tracks comments within other WordPress blogs. It makes it really easy to follow conversations and topics, that I can't do as easily with blogs using other types. Sounds like you can figure out what you like better though.

but correct me if i'm wrong nathan, thats only wordpress.com
if you do your own install of the wordpress.org software it wont work the social networking part quite as well...
thats my understanding... eg. metacatholic.co.uk - he uses his own install of wordpress but my comments on his site aren't tracked wordpress.com, nor can he probably track the rest of his comments through his own dashboard... but i dont know that for sure.

It depends on how much you alter things, or at least that is how I understand it. I'm pretty sure that there are lots of people using WordPress software, locally hosted, that still links up comments just fine.

now the best way here too is to tell us the url to both the wordpress one or movable type, whichever and we can give you an opinion on which looks better or is easier to use..
also we're curious as to where you write.

OK guys,
I've gotten the Wordpress site done enough that I'm somewhat happy with the overall look. The content, i.e., side bars are not exactly what I want. I also have am not totally satisfied with the Movable Type site either. The current theme doesn't grab me as much as the WP one I found.

Here's the urls. I literally just started posting so there's not much info. Also I used the existing discussion on drinking here as a jumping off point.

The goal for this blog is basically a mechanism for me to spend more time delving into the Bible and some observations of Christian Living.

I have a great desire to work on some end time articles and some other stuff as well so as time permits, I'll start researching for them.

Here's the urls. Right now I have a redirect, so that main site defaults to the MT blog. For comparison sake, I have the same write up on both sites.

Wordpress http://theologynow.net/wp/
Movable type http://theologynow.net/tn

Some observations
WordPress. Tons of resources available, very easy setup. dynamic updates, that is no need to hit publish.
Movable type. Setup wasn't bad, but not as easy as WP. Not much available with regards to themes, as least in comparison to WP. The dashboard and management of the blog provides a greater degree of information thats easier to work with. The dashboard is much more logically designed and laid out then WP's. Making changes and/or posts require the need to hit publish.

I need to get a few more articles under my belt before I can determine which product has better editing capabilities.

Overall I like MT, but lack of resources is limiting and so I'm wondering if going that route will box me in later down the road. I also want to begin spending my time on writing, not working on the design. I suspect I may get off the ground quicker with WP.

you've learned the number one most important point to blogging. so many people spend so much time on the details they never actually write.

I agree with you that mt might be more limiting down the road than wordpress...
but that said I WAY prefer the mt theme... but this is just an opinion from a guy who just ignored everyone's opinion and went to three columns when everyone thought I shouldnt... so....

keep writing.. i'm so curious

Yup, with the new version that is available (as a release candidate) I got a theme that works for me. The look and feel was the final piece in the puzzle. I was starting to rework an existing theme to suite my needs but then found the newer version had what I was looking for.

That said, I've exercised wordpress from my web host (actually just changed the wordpress directory permissions to 600. Its now only accessible by me. I'll keep it around for a week or two and then delete it. I've stopped updating that blog with the entries from MT. Additionally I've removed the redirect from the .htaccess file and moved up the location to the root.

All is good Smile

So is the new version in the old link, or do you have a new link for us to scope it out?

Yes, http://www.theologynow.net/ is the correct link. I had a temp redirect going to http://www.theologynow.net/tn so I could run two blog programs under the same domain without conflicting with each other. Now that I'm only using one, I moved the blog up to the root address.

I like your layout very well. Just a hint of color too (hint, hint), seems to have come together very nicely.

I want to do something with the header but I'm not sure. I like the darker banner and adding too much is usually worse then adding too little. I see about trying to change the fonts, if that will be easy enough of not. For now, I want to focus on the content and as I get ideas I'll update the look and feel.

You could try changing the black banner background to the dark red color. The same way as you have it already for the "Lookup a word or passage in the Bible" section.
