Pretty good book I just had to read on the Song of Solomon, but it's pretty awkward to read some of these things from the mouth of a seminary professor.


Nonetheless it includes a modern translation of the song as well as a new paraphrase... I found it very useful for a book we often hear no teaching on at all.

I would also recommend finding a copy of Calvin Seerveld's The Greatest Song, which is another translation and interpretation of Song of Songs.



The kicker with Seerveld is that he uses the tradition that sees three main characters: the woman, the lover and Solomon, plus the chorus et al. The dynamic between the virtuous love of the young lovers and the lechery and lust of an older Solomon drives a very compelling drama.

hmm... i would be interested to hear that view... i've only heard about it..
but truth be told. i've got a lot of reading for seminary and it may be a long time before i have spare time for a book like this... that said.

i just read your post on this... shocking to say the least...

I was discussing it briefly with nathan... and I have to say... I'm not a fan at all of literal translation. (just look at how poorly google does it). as a person who does translation I have to say that if the context isn't taken into account the conclusions and even little phrases will be gravely different. often just plain wrong...

but i cant bash it till i read it...
